Scrapbooking has become a very popular craft. Unlike, say, basket making or pottery, it allows you to create a beautiful history of your family and friends, as well as a craft work. That’s particularly attractive for new parents who want to scrapbook their little ones, and perhaps gift them the book for their 18th birthday.
Naturally, the first essential you’re going to need is a scrapbooking album. These come in all shapes and sizes, but a standard beginner size is a foot square (12″ x 12″). Make sure you buy one which has page protectors in Mylar, polypropylene or polyethylene – you don’t want your beautiful work being scratched or caught up by the page opposite, but you also don’t want inferior page protectors which will start to yellow or become fragile after a few years.
Next think about adhesives. No two scrapbookers will ever agree about their favorites. Back in the old days you’d have a glue pot full of liquid glue; nowadays most scrapbookers prefer glue sticks or glue pens, which are neater to use. Foam dots or glue dots and photo tape are also popular, as is Japanese washi tape.
Scissors, shape cutters, punches, or a swivel knife (though you may need to practice to learn how to use it) are all useful. Precision is important so using kitchen scissors isn’t going to give you the right results. You might also want to get tools with ergonomic handles.
Once you get to pens, you’ve got a huge variety to choose from. Metallic gel pens are particularly popular. Pens with pigment ink are best if you want vibrant color. You’ll also want cardstock in solid colors – make sure it’s solid core, not white inside, or it won’t look right. You’ll be able to print on this using an inkjet or laser printer, then use your piece in the scrapbook.
Many people now like to combine their scrapbooking with journaling or even sketching. If you’re just trying out the craft, you could get a scrapbooking supply kit containing a little of everything. These are a great way to get into scrapbooking and other arts, and you can add more materials and tools as you go on.
But don’t forget to check out Vipon’s coupon deals before you splurge. If you find a really good discount on craft materials, why not just double your order and make twice as much art for the same price?
